The Adaptive Services Division (ASD) helps make the District of Columbia Public Library a leading resource for people with disabilities, for the deaf community and for DC’s multifaceted society of older adults, veterans, and injured servicemen and servicewomen of the United States Armed Forces.

We have a special Adaptive Technology Program to help older adults, the deaf and those with visual and physical disabilities use library materials and resources.  Adaptive technologies are tools, electronic devices, and computer technologies that promote communication and independence. If you are losing your vision or hearing, our demonstration collections of adaptive technology can assist in decisions about what devices might work best for independence at home and work. Through our Adaptive Technology training program, library customers can learn to use closed-circuit television magnifiers and scanning software for print too small to read.  They can surf the Internet or send email using screen-reading or screen-magnifying computer software.

The Adaptive Services Division provides books, magazines, newspapers and other materials in accessible formats through the DC Regional Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped (LBPH).  Large print books can be found in the Popular Library at Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library, and in branches throughout the DC Public Library system.  Washington Volunteer Readers for the Blinds record selected books, periodicals and other print materials for LBPH customers.

Library Service to the Deaf Community offers free American Sign Language classes and deaf culture programs, as well as resources by and about the deaf community.

Homebound Services opens the District of Columbia’s rich collection of books, videos and DVDs to DC residents who are homebound on a temporary or permanent basis because of age or physical disability or illness.

Older Adult Services reaches residents of DC’s retirement homes, nursing homes, and senior wellness and recreation centers with special library programs and services designed to promote reading and lifelong learning.

The Adaptive Services Division looks forward to serving you.  Give us a call!
